PostSubject: Shininess Myth FAQ   Sun Aug 30, 2009 2:51 am

I wrote this FAQ because I've seen so many people talk ignorantly about shiny Pokemon. This guide will hopefully clear up any questions you still have about shinies.

You may have seen or even captured an alternate-colored Pokemon. These extremely rare colorations are called shiny Pokemon. Shiny Pokemon sparkle when they are released from a Pokeball or encountered in the wild.

SHININESS MYTHS

Shiny Pokemon are stronger/weaker than normal Pokemon!
Although some shinies may appear to have different stats, the myth that shinies are stronger or weaker than normal Pokemon is false. Pokemons' stats are determined by Personality Values, and these are randomly generated when you encounter a wild Pokemon. (There is one exception to this. In GSC, shininess was determined by a Pokemon's IVs, making them generally stronger than normal Pokemon. This has since changed, and shininess is no longer based on IVs in recent generations.)

There is a shiny [insert name of Pokemon] on Route [insert route number]!!!!
This is partially false. Shiny encounters are completely random, which means you could find a shiny when you least expect it (I once ran into a random patch of grass and the first Pokemon I encountered was a shiny Starly. This happened once again on a different route while I was looking for wild Chansey). There is no sure way to tell if you'll encounter a shiny or not unless you're using the PokeRadar to hunt for them. Remember, shiny PokeRadar patches sparkle. I'm sure you'll recognize one right away. If you see a sparkling patch, put on a Repel and go get your shiny!

If you do _______, you will find a shiny Pokemon!!
This is false. There is no sure way of encountering a shiny Pokemon. It is random, and there is approximately a 1 in 8192 chance of a single Pokemon encounter being shiny. (The ONLY guaranteed shinies are the red Gyarados in G/S/C and the Zigzagoon from a previous Pokemon event.)

If you evolve your Pokemon, it will no longer be shiny!
This is false. A legitimate (not hacked) shiny Pokemon will stay shiny after it's evolved. However, it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between a normal and a shiny. Garchomp, for example, is just a hint lighter than its normal coloration. An easy way to tell if it's shiny is that a shiny Pokemon will have a red star in its profile.

If you have any more rumors you need busted, PM me and I'll answer your question!

--

" Hiya Coji! I need a shiny rumor busted. A few of my friends said that they have shiny starters after starting their game over again. I know that they own ARs (and constantly make super pokes to take me down that usually backfire on them XD) and I think they might have hacked. Could you investigate this? Pretty pwease? Laughing

~Striekr "

Dear "Strieker" (XD),
It is in fact possible to get a shiny starter by restarting/soft-resetting your game. HOWEVER, the chances of starting with a shiny starter are 1:8192, the same ratio of encountering any other shiny. I'm sure that if one were dedicated enough, they would restart their game over and over until their starter Pokemon appeared shiny. If you want to restart your game 8192 times (Even if you DO reset your game this many times, you are not guaranteed a shiny. It's all based on how the HEX of a certain Pokemon corresponds to its OT. It's a whole mathematical formula that I don't wish to get into), be my guest. But the chances that more than one or two of your friends actually reset their game this many times is pretty slim. Actually, some people use the soft-reset (L+R+Start+Select to restart your game) method to encounter shiny legendaries and other Pokemon that only appear once in a game (Eevee, Rotom, Wonder Card Pokemon, etc). This is like looking for a shiny by simply running into tall grass. It takes many hours.

To answer your question in less words, I think they hacked them, though I'd have to see the Pokemon myself to be certain.

It sounds like they either used a shiny code that works with starters, eggs, and legendaries (There is a code for this; I have one myself), or they full-blown hacked them in. Some people don't like to reset their game and lose their hard-earned Pokemon and items and BT record, so restarting a game just to get a shiny starter seems odd when you can just breed for these Pokemon. (And if they have Pokesav, it's ENTIRELY possible that they were completely forced into the game.) Though shiny-coded Pokemon are not necessarily hacked, there is just something about obtaining a legitimate shiny versus forcing a Pokemon to be shiny.

Thanks, there.

I have never encountered a shiny in the wild before, unfortunately (obviously excluding Gyarados)..

Challenge their shiny with the same Pokémon non-shiny and win.

Don't lose. If you die, I'll never speak to you again. Obviously.

The golden Onix is more of a greenish yellow. It does exist, because I caught one while that pink haired girl was following me around. I even KO'd her Kadabra first just in case.

I agree Marriland is easier to navigate and the specific pages for each pokemon are laid out better (in my opinion)

I also prefer Bulbapedia to Serebii.

But, back on the shiny case. I've encountered 1 shiny pokemon my whole life and it happened to be a Shiny Mankey. Unfortunately though, I was stupid and killed it. It was about 3 weeks ago and I was actually looking for a Jigglypuff outside of Mt. Moon (on LeafGreen). I went into the path of grass and the 1st pokemon that appeared was the Shiny Mankey. I didnt notice it was shiny (or I would have captured it ASAP), so I quickly attacked it as soon as i could. Only after hitting it and killing it in 1 blow, did I notice it was slightly greenish and brown in color (you know that split second after you kill a pokemon and it stays there before disappearing off screen? Yeah...thats what im talking about). I was soo mad at myself. But what can you do. I continued my search for Jigglypuff...and the next pokemon I run into was none other than Entei. Of course though, I let it run off. No point in catching it since I had one already. The 3rd pokemon I ran into in the patch of grass was Jigglypuff.

Some luck huh? I ran into a Shiny pokemon, a legendary dog, and the pokemon that I was looking for in ONE patch of grass, back to back to back.
After that, I realized that looking for Shiny pokemon was extremely difficult, but not impossible, so now Im searching for a Shiny Vulpix (and Meowth, to have a white Persian, instead of a tanish one).
